Long ago, I joined a congregation of one of the Christian denominations to sing a song with excitement. The song goes like this: “I am married to Jesus, satan leave me alone (2 times), my Husband is coming to take me away to an everlasting home.” I could imagine the devil dance to the rhythm of the song because of the way some believers sang it – singing without understanding. The Bible instructs every believer to vehemently resist the devil and he will flee (James 4:7b) and they should flee from all appearances of evil (1st Thessalonians 5:22). This means every believer is meant to exercise authority over satan and his cohorts while ensuring that they do not mingle with him in any way. This is so because the devil’s mission is to adulterate the believer’s marriage relationship with Christ, who is the bridegroom.
Scripture is clear about every believer’s marriage relationship with Jesus Christ. It is only those believers who do not commit and remain in ‘adultery’ with satan that will be presented to God when Jesus comes again (Ephesians 5:27; Revelation 19:1-9).
The Precious “Bride Price”
Unlike many Asian and African cultures where a bride price is paid by the groom to the bride’ s family in the form of money or any valuable property, Jesus paid the “bride price” for every believer with His shed blood. The purpose of bride price is not to buy women but it is seen as a way of placing value on the labor of women and the bride family’s effort in raising the female. It is an instrument to ratify a marriage and one of the highest honors confirming a bride’s value and womanhood.
God values man and He does not desire that anyone should perish (2nd Peter 3:9). For this reason He sacrificed Jesus Christ to pay the price (John 3:16). So, unlike our traditional marriages, every believer is bought with a price and belongs to Christ.
“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (Ist Corinthians 6:20)
Those who accept this truth and confesses Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior receive a seal of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13) and have the ticket to attend the marriage ceremony with Christ (Revelation 19:1-9). Moreover, they can easily say to satan, “Don’t touch me, I am a possession of Jesus Christ!” For you to enjoy this marriage, say this prayer of salvation: Lord Jesus, I accept that I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sin. Come into my heart. I receive You as my Lord and Savior; I believe that You came, died for me and rose again to save me. Conform me to Your likeness. I declare that I am born again. Amen!
